Collar - Pre-determine size w/ breeder or adoption facility. Too loose & pup will slip out of it.
Leash - Start with 6’ if you’re not sure which length.
Crate - Helps with housebreaking. Safe pet containment when you are not home. Also strongly recommend a pet dog gate to separate and protect rooms.
Exercise Pen – Optional & seriously consider for small breeds..
Bath & Grooming Supplies - Gentle Dog shampoo, Brush, Toothbrush & Pet Toothpaste, Nail Clippers, Ear Cleaner.
Food/Water Bowls - Size appropriate –Styles optional.
Food: Purchase age/dog size appropriate. Purchase what pup is using now or get some from breeder EVEN IF you plan to change it. Within a 2-week time slowly wean pup from old food to new. This avoids digestion trouble, loose stools, etc. Have a can of pumpkin in the cabinet. Why? A little added to mealtime helps to stop loose stools.
Treats - Age appropriate, too many and your pup won't eat at mealtime. Some owners like to train with a treat only for teaching commands.
Housebreaking - Mentioning again the Crate. Some like Pee Pee Pads. Pet Stain Remover, Waste Disposal Plan of Action, i.e. Pooper Scoop, disposal bags/system, etc.
Toys - Chew toys for teething (or not), Play Toys for fun.
Health - Vet visit if not done already. Consider preventive meds for fleas, heartworm/worms.
Identification - Name tag or Order personalized collar, Register Dog License. Consider microchip or tatoo ID.
Portable Pet Carrier for Rides - Use existing Crate or purchase Portable Kennel/Carrier.
Socialize & Exercise - Go out & show off your new addition. Pup gets used to children & being touched. Bond with pup or older adopted pet. Healthy, too.
Puppy Proof House. By now you’ll have to puppy proof unrestricted areas of your home (if you haven’t already). Get down to their level, look around. Helpful to purchase a Teething Deterrent like, Bitter Apple spray, for woodwork/furniture, etc.
Training Education - Local classes, Books or e-books (downloadable books from your computer), videos, correction supplies, training gear (hunting, public service, etc) "Train or be trained."
Spay/Neuter - Begging you to please consider.
After Housetraining/Or for older dog adopted - Consider Dog Bed. If you wait you will not have to replace a shredded pillow every week.
Looking for convenience? - Optional Dog Door, Outdoor Kennel Run, Fence, Ramps, etc.
Clothes - Age appropriate (Choking/Shredding warning for puppies) Optional fashion for some, a Must for others. Various collars, leashes, clothes, accessories.
