1. Puppy Mills are not an "animal rights activist" soapbox hot topic. They do exist. If you suspect you have answered an advertisement leading towards inhumane conditions, contact your local kennel club, breed club, or rescue group. Suggest that someone visits to confirm what you may have found.
We, personally, had this experience. First clue? We were told, "Parents would be seen upon return visit." Second clue? Puppy was brought to us inside the residence, from the outside. We were not exposed to outside living conditions. I tried to peak but was redirected.
2. Pet Shop Puppies are adorable aren't they? Where did they honestly come from? Can you visit the parents? Family history? Even a smaller "boutique" who says "trust us" should raise a red flag if you cannot answer these and more of your questions with proof.
3. Adopt or Rescue from a credible source.
- Many times they will inform you if children or other pets are compatible.
- Knowledge of past abuse is helpful.
- Behavior querks such as bite history or running away from home frequently is something you may want to know about.
4. Pet Surprise Gifts are well meaning but may become unwanted houseguests.
- Please discuss your gift of a puppy with the recipient.
- Pets are best purchased when the holiday has passed for numerous reasons; including time for care taking and adjusting.
- May we suggest puppy supplies as a "pre-gift" in anticipation of the new arrival.
5. Do Not purchase or adopt a dog of any age based on impulse or emotion. This is a long-term commitment. Puppies do grow bigger. Research your breed choice(s) so you have an idea of what to expect.
