Training Collars:

  • Chain Choke Collars. There are opinions out there about the chain choke collar. With good reason since most do not know how to properly use it. The idea is not to drag or pull your dog or offer a full-blown hard jerk to the throat out of temper. If you have not been trained yourself, don't use it.
  • Pinch Prong Collars. While these correction collars may appear inhumane, self-correction is as easy as power steering on your car. For the pullers out there, yes, this works.
  • Electronic Collars. These work nicely with the entry and exit through dog doors, magnetic or electrical sensors patrol stop and go. Wireless barrier devices will control territory that is off limits indoors such as furniture or the cat's food and litter box. Battery collars are used for warning and correction with yard containment such as an electronic invisible fence.
  • Bark control. Citronella or vibration/shock stimulation are tempting when the barking won't cease. I feel your frustration here. With an invisible fence installed you may want to consider "correction confusion" with the electronics. For some dogs the citronella works well. Other forms of ultrasonic stimulation could be a temporary device until the dog gets the hint. Again, there is controversy with re-evaluating basic commands to not need these types of training supplies.
  • GPS tracking systems. Locators are the way to go for the field roamers. If you trust your dogs off lead in wide-open spaces for recreation or hunting, you can locate your outdoor buddy easily.

Harnesses. The harness is versatile for training gear. If pulling is the issue, specifically look for the No-Pull design that wraps around the upper front legs. It works nicely. Popular for a collar alternative. Styles vary, turn function into fashion. Find activity vest-like material for land or water. Help out the handicapped or medical recovery with the aid of a lifting tool.

Leashes. While training your dog, a 6-foot lead is recommended first. Yes, retractable leashes look like fun in a self-contained handle. But trust me, you will want to wait on the land/water freedom until your puppers can walk nicely on your left side.
